Guide to Repairing Your Awning Fabric

Like any other item in your house, fabric awnings are susceptible to wear and tear over time due to the weather, environmental stressors, and technical faults. As a result, you may notice some rips or tears, stains, or mildew on your awning. In some cases, you may even have a bent awning pole or a loose bracket. Here’s the tips for awning fabric repair:

1)   Repairing rips or small tears

The awning fabric tends to rip or tear when the fabric is stretched beyond its limit or subjected to immense force, causing you to have a tattered awning. The best way for you to repair these damages of awning fabric is to cut a piece of the same fabric (big enough to cover the rip) and sew it on the underside.

Make sure to stitch around the edges of the replacement patch so that there’s room on all sides of the rip or tear. Once it is securely attached to the awning, carefully stitch the edges to the newly attached fabric as tight as possible so that no wind gets underneath the seam.

2)   Cleaning the stains

Nothing is free from being stained and that includes your awning. If you install it in your backyard or the patio, expect your awning to have some watermarks or stubborn stains like bird droppings.

To clean the stains from your awning, you can try using gentle soaps as they are less likely to damage your awning fabric. You can also try applying a mixture of hot water and baking soda for stubborn stains. Let the mixture sit for a while, then rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.

3)   Removing the mildew

Malaysia’s weather can be extremely hot or cold sometimes. And the humidity isn’t something that we can control during the monsoon season, which can cause mildew to form on your awning during the rainy days.

Fortunately, you can remove the mildew by using a paper towel or a scraper. Before you do that, make sure to spray some awning cleaner to break up mould spores. Then use the paper towel to wipe off the mildew. You can also use water and mild soap to remove the mildew.

4)   Restoring bent awning pole

The metal supports of your awning can bend due to strong winds or heavy thunderstorms. It can also bend under extreme weight. Hence, you must restore the support as soon as you discover them because it can put the entire structural integrity at risk.

The best way to restore a bent awning pole is to either find another metal support or replace them immediately. If you choose the former, you will need to wedge the metal support inside to support your awning. Once it is secured, gently apply pressure to restore the bend.

5)   Fixing loose bracket

Having a loose bracket on your awning is a common issue and luckily it’s an easy fix. You will need some pliers and a monkey wrench. Put the pliers on the head of the bolt and use the wrench to tighten the nut. Avoid over-tightening the bracket as that will strip the threading.

If you can’t reach the head of the bolt, use the pliers on the thread side of the bolt to hold it in place. Be wary of the amount of force you apply so that it doesn’t damage the bolt.

If your awning fabric is badly damaged from the frequent wear and tear, consider replacing it with another fabric that’s sturdier than your current one. If the awning pole is beyond repair, it may be time for you to consider a full awning replacement from a specialist like M & N France Fabric Awning.
